Notes |
- From William G. Sprague, correspondent, note of 19 July 2022
Further information about the incorrect age of Sarah Ellen Nichol being too young to have her daughter Hannah. I advised she was buried in Maple Creek Cemetery with her husband Thomas Allman, although the cemetery made no connection between the two. Sara was listed as born 1867 and died 1920. The first thing I checked was to make sure the family from Ohio was the same family that moved to Penn. They were the same. I then checked ages of Thomas, Sarah Ellen and daughter Hannah and they were all correct except Sarah was born c1848 and not 1867 as stated on grave marker. Ancestry.com made the connection between the 2 as husband and wife, but they used the DOB as 1848 and DOD as 1920. So the grave stone reflects she was born about 19 years after she actually was.
I checked Sarah E. Allman's grave marker which is clearly pictured and it does have a YOB: of 1867 and YOD: of 1920. She age clearly is off between the census reports and her grave stone. (Makes me wonder if it was remotely possible that somebody could have been off by 19 years when the stone was made, which means that Sarah E. Allman in the cemetery was the wrong person.
When I looked at Sarah's grave stone, I could see a partial view of some writing on the top of the stone as Sarah's info was on the front of the stone. The information was Aug. 16, 1934, but nothing else was visible.
I then checked the entire Maple Creek Cemetery records for somebody who died on Aug. 16, 1934 and who pops up but her daughter, Gaynelle Allman McCormick as follows:
See 1910 census for her and her husband previously sent.
Maple Creek Cemetery
Charleroi, Washington County, Pennsylvania, USA.
Gaynelle Allaman McCormick
DOB: March 17, 1887
DOD: Aug. 16, 1934
Source: Undated Newspaper Article:
Mrs. Charles McCormick
Charleroi, Aug. 18. Mrs. Gaynell Allaman McCormick, wife of Charles McCormick, died in her home at Troy Thursday night at 6:30 o'clock after a lingering illness. Private funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the home of Mrs. Mabel J. Allman, 526 Washington Avenue, Charleroi. Burial will be in the Maple Creek Cemetery.
Mrs. McCormick formerly resided in Bentleyville. Besides her husband, she leaves two nieces, Mrs. Jean Allaman Lowman, of Charleroi, and Mrs. Pauline Stewart Jones, of Bentleyville, and a nephew, Allaman Stewart, of Columbus, O.
I am not sure why everybody has their last name as Allaman instead of Allman like her parents. Her grave stone has only the initial A. and not the maiden name spelled out. Could be a name change or a mistake by the newspaper. I checked the cemetery and there is nobody with a last name of Allaman, but 16 people named Allman. My guess is that it was a mistake by the newspaper and everybody picked it up from the article. Also, her husband Charles McCormick is not in the cemetery.
My conclusion is that the Sarah E. Allman 1867 to 1920 is the wife of Thomas W. Allman, but that somebody cut Sarah's grave marker with a DOB that was c19 years off. Her true DOB: is May 1, 1848 and her DOD: is Jan. 1, 1920. [2]
