In the 1900 U.S. Census, widow Mary E. Murphy, 53, born May 1847 in Canada, father born Mass., mother born Canada, was living on Lincoln Street in Calais, Maine, with dentist Charles S., 28, born June 1872; teacher Florence, 25, born May 1875; and school teacher Gertrude L., 23, born November 1877, all born in Maine; and Arthur B., 18, born August 1882 in Canada. The children's father had been born in Maine.
All four of Mary's children were still living.
Mad. M. MURPHY died at his home in this city Friday morn. of pneumonia. He was a member of the Grand Army Post and Calais Lodge, F.& A.M. under which bodies he was buried Sunday afternoon. He was but 45 years of age. He leaves a wife and four children. (St. Croix Courier, January 23, 1890)
In the 1881 Canada Census, farmer James M. Murphy, 32, born U.S., was living in Economy, N.S. with Mary, 35, born N.B.; Charles S., 9; Florinda, 7; and Gertrude, , 3, born U.S.; Margaret, 64, born Ireland; Albert Lank, 33, born U.S.; and Donald Flinn, 19, born U.S.
In the 1870 U.S. Census, lumber surveyor James M. Murphy, 26, born Maine, was living in Ward 2, Calais, Maine, with school teacher Mary E., 25, born Maine;house former (?) William Booard, 22, born Canada.
James M. Murphy and Mary E. Sprague, both of Calais, made their marriage intentions on July 29 and August 3, respectively, 1869, and they were married on August 4. (Calais Vital Records)
(When daughter Florence married Raymond Danforth on January 6, 1923 in Manchester, N.H., she reported that her father was Calais native James Madison who worked in the lumber business and died at age 44; and her mother was Milltown, N.B. native Mary E. Sprague who had died at age 64.) [1]
