Erie County Reporter of 5-5-1881, p. 8, col. 2.- "Died. McDonald- At her residence on Saturday last, Mrs. McDonald, wife of the late A. J. McDonald. Mrs. McDonald's death was very sudden and unexpected. The day preceeding her death she had been to work as usual.. Shortly after she had retired for the night, she was heard to groan twice, and upon repairing to her room it was found she had just expired. Heart disease was the cause of her death. The funeral services were held at her late residence last Tuesday. It will be remembered that Mr. McDonald ded of the same complaint a few months ago. Both were old and respected citizens."
Register of 1-12-1921, p. 8, col. 3-- "Mrs. J. S. McDonald is Dead at Huron. HURON, Jan. 11. --(Special.)--The funeral of Mrs. Nellie A. McDonald, 74, widow of J. S. McDonald, will be held from the residence Thursday afternoon

Ill for several months, suffiering from a complication of diseases, death relieved her suffering at 3 o'clock Tuesday morning."

From John E. Campbell, correspondent, note of June 1, 2010
I would like to draw your attention to a question you asked about Helen Amelia "Nellie" Tinney and Charlotte "Lottie" Wright. I know you like a good story, as do I, and this is about as good a story, although lacking in narrative detail, as we are likely to obtain from documents of the period.
Back in March, my last message to you, concerning I304273 Helen Amelia Tinney, I304275 Eliza Amelia Carpenter, I312899 Charlotte Wright was as follows:
I at last have an answer to your question about the relationship between the two girls in the picture who are wearing dresses cut from the same bolt of cloth . The attached 1860 census shows that Helen Amelia "Nellie" Tinney and her mother, Eliza Amelia Carpenter (widow of Connel Tinney), along with Charlotte "Lottie" Wright resided in the household of James Brooks in Huron, Ohio. James Brooks' occupation is given as "merchant". My mother had no knowledge of James Brooks. At this point he does not appear to be a relative but he certainly deserves to be considered family because he took in three unfortumate women, and two of them were my great-grandmother and her mom!
It is interesting that the 1880 census shows Helen Tinney, now the widow of George Sprague who died on the trail to the California Gold Rush, to be a "dry goods merchant". Presumably she learned the trade in the household of James Brooks when she was thirteen. The 1880 census finds James Brooks living in Huron as follows:
